News Synopsis

The US state department, in a historic move, issued their first third-gender passport with an ‘X’ marker. The ‘X’ marker is a gender-neutral term that doesn’t force people to identify with either male or female. It is used by non-binary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people to identify themselves.

The passport has been issued to Dana Zzyym who has been fighting for an ‘X’ gendered passport for a long time. Their fight has been long and daunting but finally has paid off. Zzyym identifies themselves as non-binary and intersex and therefore refused to conform to the binary of male and female for their passport. This is truly a historic move as now more people who don't conform to the gender binary can get their passports with the ‘X’ marker and don't have to pretend to be something they are not. As we progress and move towards a more inclusive future, it is important to take into account people who have long been living as outcasts and on the margins.
