News Synopsis

According to data provided by Minister of State, Finance, Bhagwat Karad at the Lok Sabha, there was a 75% drop from 95.41 million beneficiaries in its launch year (May 2020-March 20,211) to 23 lakh beneficiaries in Financial Year 2022.

The drop in beneficiary counts indicates that economic recovery began to occur. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) also started to recover. Anil Bhardwaj Secretary General, Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) said that if banks cannot sanction the Rs 5 lakh crore scheme's entire coverage until March 2023, that would indicate that the stress in the MME sector, that was thought to be very high, wasn’t so. ECLGS was launched in May 2020. It has benefited approximately 1.19 crore companies as of June 30, 2022.

The  Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) beneficiaries count included 1.13 crore MSMEs (95%), while the amount sanctioned to MSMEs was Rs 2.32 lakh crore (66%) of the total. ECLGS offered 100% coverage to all existing borrowers. The initial limit for the guarantee coverage was Rs 3 lakh crore. This was increased to Rs 4.5 lakh crore, and then to Rs 5 lakh crore in the budget announcement 2022-23. According to SBI research, ECLGS has saved 13.5 million MSME jobs.
