News Synopsis

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court of India that the three absconding businessmen- Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Mehul Choksi, who committed some of the biggest bank frauds in the past few years have returned around Rs. 18,000 cr to the banks. Earlier the apex court of the nation issued a case of contempt and ordered Vijay Mallya to appear before the court in two weeks. Mallya is currently residing in the United Kingdom. He is the prime accused in a fraud case of Rs. 9000 cr involving several banks. Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi have been accused in a PNB scam of Rs.13,000 cr. U.K. government in 2019 ordered the extradition of Vijay Mallya and he after that filed an application to seek political asylum in the U.K. Currently, 4,700 cases are being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and only 313 people have been apprehended yet.
