News Synopsis

Government of India on Wednesday imposed a ban on the import of drones manufactured in other countries. Drone components, however, can be imported without any restrictions. This decision is seen as a step to promote drone manufacturing in India under the government’s made-in-India scheme. A senior official from Aviation Ministry said: “With the liberalized Drone Rules, 2021, drone airspace map, drone PLI scheme, drone certification scheme, and single window DigitalSky Platform in place, this is a good time to invest in the Indian drone industry”. There are however some exceptions, for the import of drones that are intended to be used for development and research, defense and security purposes, after certain clearances from the authorities.
