News Synopsis

The Government of India has approved booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for adults above the age of 18. These additional doses will be available at private vaccination centers from tomorrow. However, not all adults can get inoculated with this booster dose. Adults who have completed nine months after receiving the second dose of the Covid vaccine are only allowed to take the booster shot. As per the data, 96% of all 15 plus population in India have received at least one dose of the vaccine while 83% have received both the doses.

Until now,  only healthcare workers, frontline workers, and people above 60 years of age were eligible to get a booster dose. The situation in India seems stable in India. However, a massive resurgence in covid cases is reported in China, Hong Kong, Germany, etc. China has also imposed a lockdown in various parts of the country. Therefore, a third dose seems very important at the moment. Some countries around the world are not allowing adults to visit without a third dose. Recently a new variant, XE variant of SARS-CoV2 has surfaced in Maharashtra.
