News Synopsis

Google Maps is undergoing significant updates, introducing several fresh features that amplify user control over their location history, timelines, and the functionality of the blue dot, signifying their current location.

In an official blog post, Google unveiled a forthcoming enhancement that allows users to easily access and manage their recent activities associated with specific locations.

This feature empowers users to delete location history, directions, searches, and visits linked to a particular place directly from the app interface. The rollout of these options is scheduled in the coming weeks.

On-Device Storage for Timeline and Location History

For individuals who have activated the Location History feature on their devices, Google has introduced a substantial change - the 'Timeline' data will now be stored locally on the device itself. This local storage option comes with the flexibility to back up this data to the cloud with encryption enabled for added security.

Moreover, Google has revised the default duration for which Location History is stored. Previously set at approximately 548 days or 18 months, the default duration will now retain history for the last 90 days. However, users have the liberty to extend this duration as per their preference.

Enhanced Blue Dot Features

The familiar blue dot symbolizing a user's location on the map will undergo improvements. Clicking on the blue dot will now offer insights into whether Location History or Timeline features are activated and if Google Maps can access the user's location.

Google confirms that users will receive notifications when these updates become available. These enhancements will be progressively rolled out to Android and iOS users throughout the year 2024. It is advised for users who wish to retain their Google Maps Location History to respond to these notifications and extend the duration before their data is automatically cleared.
