Google Launches Emergency Location Service for Android Users in India
News Synopsis
Google has rolled out its Emergency Location Service (ELS) feature for Android users in India. The service automatically shares a user’s precise location with emergency responders when they contact police, fire services, or an ambulance — and Uttar Pradesh has become the first state to fully integrate the system.
Google Introduces Powerful Emergency Feature for Android Users
What Is Google’s Emergency Location Service (ELS)?
Emergency Location Service (ELS) is an in-built Android safety feature that sends a user’s location directly to emergency responders when they make an emergency call or send an emergency SMS. This helps authorities reach people faster — especially in situations where callers cannot describe their exact location.
How Does ELS Work?
According to Google, ELS uses:
-
GPS
-
Wi-Fi
-
Mobile networks
to determine the user’s position.
The company claims the technology can pinpoint locations with accuracy of up to 50 meters. As soon as an Android phone dials an emergency number or sends an emergency message, the location is automatically transmitted to emergency services.
Fully Implemented in Uttar Pradesh
To activate ELS in India, states need to integrate the system with their own emergency networks. Uttar Pradesh has taken the lead by linking ELS with the 112 emergency number.
UP Police completed this integration in collaboration with Pert Telecom Solutions.
The service is completely free and tracks location only when 112 is dialed.
Which Android Phones Will Support ELS?
Google confirmed that ELS is available on Android 6.0 and newer versions. Globally, the service has already assisted in more than 20 million emergency calls and messages, even in cases where the call disconnects within seconds.
Google’s Privacy Assurance
Google says that location data used by ELS is not stored by the company.
The information goes directly to emergency service providers and is used solely to deliver assistance.
Emergency Live Video Feature Also Introduced
Google has also launched an Emergency Live Video feature. During an emergency, responders can request a live video feed from the user. With one tap, users can allow video streaming from their phone’s camera — helping authorities better assess the situation.
