News Synopsis

Google has announced five new sustainability initiatives in India that combine artificial intelligence, satellite data and technology to support clean energy, climate research, agriculture and environmental solutions.

Google Expands AI-Powered Solar Technology Across India

Google is expanding its sustainability efforts in India by using artificial intelligence and advanced imagery to improve access to solar energy. The company has announced that its Solar API can now provide rooftop solar insights for more than 300 million rooftops across the country.

The technology is designed to help solar companies and installers assess the potential of rooftops without requiring an initial physical inspection. By using AI and imagery, the platform can offer information about roof structures and their suitability for solar installations.

Solar API Could Simplify Rooftop Solar Installations

Google's Solar API can help installers understand a property's solar potential, develop suitable system designs and prepare proposals for customers. This could reduce the time and effort required during the early stages of rooftop solar projects.

Platforms such as Solar Ladder and OpenSolar are already incorporating the Solar API into their operations. The expansion comes as India's residential rooftop solar market continues to grow, supported by government programmes including the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

By making rooftop information more accessible, Google's technology could help solar businesses speed up the process of identifying suitable properties and planning installations.

Google Signs 150MW Solar Agreement With ReNew

As part of its clean-energy efforts, Google has also entered into a long-term agreement with ReNew Power for a 150MW solar project in Rajasthan.

The project represents Google's second Scope 3-focused solar initiative in India. With the latest agreement, Google's total contracted solar capacity with ReNew reaches 300MW.

The partnership highlights the company's wider effort to increase its use of renewable energy while supporting India's transition towards a lower-carbon electricity system.

AI and Satellite Technology to Support Rice Farmers

Google's sustainability initiatives also extend to agriculture. The company is collaborating with Mitti Labs on a project involving tens of thousands of smallholder rice farmers in Telangana.

The initiative will encourage farmers to adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), a water-management technique designed to reduce the environmental impact of rice cultivation.

How Alternate Wetting and Drying Works

Under conventional rice cultivation, fields are often kept continuously flooded. With AWD, farmers periodically allow fields to drain before adding water again.

This approach can reduce the amount of water required for cultivation while also helping lower methane emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that can be generated when rice fields remain flooded for extended periods.

Google said the Telangana project could potentially help mitigate nearly 3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 20 years. Satellite imagery and field-based monitoring networks will be used to track the project's environmental impact.

Google Expands Climate Technology Centre

Google is also broadening the scope of its Center for Climate Technology, launched in February in collaboration with the Government of India's Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.

The centre initially focused on areas such as developing green workforce skills and supporting low-carbon construction materials. Its expanded focus will now include additional environmental challenges.

Water, E-Waste and Battery Recycling Added to Focus

The centre will increasingly explore solutions related to water stewardship, electronic waste and battery recycling.

These areas are becoming increasingly important as India experiences growing demand for energy, digital devices, electric mobility and industrial resources. Technology-driven approaches could help improve resource efficiency and support more sustainable economic growth.

Google DeepMind Accelerator Supports Indian Climate Startups

Another part of Google's initiative involves supporting Indian startups working on environmental and climate-related challenges.

Through the Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet programme, Google is supporting four Indian startups: Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests and Climitra Carbon.

These startups are applying technologies such as artificial intelligence, satellite imagery and drones to address challenges involving agriculture, biodiversity and carbon management.

AI Could Strengthen Climate and Agriculture Solutions

The use of AI and remote-sensing technologies can help organisations collect and analyse environmental information at a much larger scale. Such tools can support farmers, researchers and businesses in understanding changing environmental conditions and developing targeted solutions.

For India, these technologies could become particularly useful in areas where large-scale monitoring through conventional methods is difficult or expensive.

Google's Broader Sustainability Strategy in India

Google's latest announcements demonstrate a broader approach to applying artificial intelligence beyond conventional software and consumer applications.

Instead of focusing solely on AI-powered digital services, the company is applying the technology to practical challenges involving solar energy, agriculture, water, waste, electricity and climate management.

The initiatives also combine multiple technologies, including AI, satellite imagery, drones and field-level data. This approach could help improve monitoring, planning and decision-making across several sustainability-focused sectors.

Conclusion

Google's five new initiatives underline the growing role of artificial intelligence in addressing India's energy, agricultural and environmental challenges. From analysing millions of rooftops for solar potential to supporting climate-focused startups and sustainable rice farming, the company is expanding AI into real-world applications. Its partnerships with businesses, farmers, researchers and government institutions could further accelerate technology-driven sustainability efforts. As India continues to expand renewable energy and strengthen climate resilience, AI-based tools could play an increasingly important role in building cleaner and more resource-efficient solutions.
