News Synopsis

Following developer backlash, Google has agreed to lower the Play Store fee for applications that provide subscription services. The business said that instead of collecting a 30% commission for subscription payments made using Google's built-in payment systems, it will charge a 15% commission. Furthermore, Google stated that eBook and audio streaming applications will be eligible for a 10% service fee.

Last year, Google introduced a small company initiative that cut the charge to 15% for applications that generate less than $1 million in revenue on its platform. According to the business, this scheme qualified 99 percent of developers for a 15 percent service charge. The firm further adds that the reduced charge on the first $1 million in total revenue collected each year is accessible to any Play developers, regardless of size, who use the Play billing system. The new regulation also comes at a critical time for Google's app store policies, which has been sparked by Epic Games' removal of Fortnite from both the App Store and Play Store, as well as the game developer's antitrust litigation against Apple and Google. States like Arizona and North Dakota are discussing new laws that would require Apple and Google to provide more alternative software distribution methods and payment choices on their platforms.
