News Synopsis

Google's innovative Circle to Search feature is breaking free from its initial launch on flagship phones. The feature, which allows users to search for information on their screen by circling or scribbling on content, is being rolled out to a wider range of Android devices.

Circle to Search Reaches More Android Phones

Initially introduced alongside the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in January, Circle to Search has become a valuable tool for users seeking information without switching apps.  Following its initial rollout on the Pixel 8 series and Galaxy S24 lineup, Google is significantly expanding accessibility.

Here's a breakdown of the extended rollout:

  • Pixel Devices: All currently supported Pixel phones, including the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, and 7a, will now have access to Circle to Search.

  • Pixel Fold and Tablet: Google's foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, and the upcoming Pixel Tablet are also slated to receive Circle to Search in the near future.

  • Samsung Galaxy Devices: Galaxy users can rejoice as the upcoming One UI 6.1 update, scheduled for later this week, will bring Circle to Search to the Galaxy S23 series, Z Fold 5, Flip 5, and Tab S9 series. While details on wider Samsung availability remain limited, a hint in a support document suggests a potential wait until October for other models.

Circle to Search Gets a Translation Boost

Previously, translating on-screen text using Circle to Search involved the cumbersome process of copying the text and then switching to a separate translation app.  Thankfully, Google is streamlining the experience with a new built-in translation function.  With a single tap, users can now instantly translate any selected text within Circle to Search, eliminating the need for copying and app switching.

This translates to a significant improvement in workflow, especially for users who frequently encounter foreign language content like documents, PDFs, or webpages.

Enhanced Shopping Experience within Search

Beyond the Circle to Search expansion and translation integration, Google is also introducing improvements to the shopping experience within Search.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Personalized Style Recommendations: Get ready for more personalized "style recommendations" when searching for clothing, shoes, and accessories. Imagine searching for "straw tote bags" or "men's polo shirts" and being presented with curated options tailored to your past browsing preferences. This personalization is achieved by allowing users to rate options with a simple thumbs up/down or a swipe action. Google remembers these ratings and uses them to refine future shopping results based on your individual taste.

Google Search Tests Trip Planning Features (US Only)

In addition to the updates mentioned above, Google is currently testing trip planning features within Google Search, but for now, it's limited to users in the US searching in English.  Imagine asking Google Search to "plan me a 3-day history trip to Philadelphia." Search would then provide you with a neatly organized itinerary that includes suggested attractions, restaurants, and even flight and hotel options, all conveniently displayed within Search.

By leveraging information from other Google services like Maps, reviews, and photos, Google is aiming to make Search a one-stop shop for trip planning. Users can even export their itineraries to Gmail, Docs, or Maps for easy access later.
