News Synopsis

Google has blocked apps related to Russia Today and Sputnik (two state-owned Russian media companies) from the European Play Store.

This is the latest in the company's efforts to curb Russia's disinformation about the Ukraine conflict on its platforms. Other than that the European Commission is also preparing to ban access to two state-backed channels. Google previously blocked the download of RT applications in Ukraine.

The company's European app store policy of banning two apps is according to YouTube. YouTube has also announced a ban on RT and Sputnik channels in Europe. Google has also banned Russian state-funded media sites from appearing on Google News.

Major tech companies including Google and Apple are continuously updating their policies as international coalitions including the USA and EU continue to put pressure on Russia.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that it would ban RT and Sputnik from app stores in all regions except Russia. However, both apps will continue to be available on Google's Play Store outside of Europe.
