News Synopsis

The German traffic agency announced a recall of Tesla models Y and 3 due to a flaw in the automatic emergency call system that affects 59,000 vehicles worldwide.

On its website on June 29, the KBA watchdog stated that a software flaw was causing a breakdown of the eCall, which is designed to automatically contact emergency responders in the event of a serious accident.
The recall was first reported on Saturday by the German regional broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, which serves the region that is home to Tesla's German model Y and battery production site near Berlin.
KBA stated that 59,129 vehicles worldwide were affected, but did not specify how many of those were registered in Germany.

The software glitch adds to Elon Musk's headaches after Tesla announced on Saturday that it delivered 17.9 percent fewer electric vehicles in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter due to China's COVID 19-related shutdown, which disrupted its production and supply chain.

Last month, Musk stated that Tesla's new factories in Texas and Berlin are "losing billions of dollars" as they struggle to increase production due to a battery shortage and Chinese port issues.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States upgraded its investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles equipped with the advanced driver assistance system Autopilot in early June, a necessary step before requesting a recall.
