News Synopsis

On Thursday, a day after Ukraine restricted a major gas transit route, Kremlin imposed sanctions on European subsidiaries of state-owned Gazprom. This has eventually intensified the gas supply crisis in Europe. After Moscow’s decision, Gas prices increased significantly.

Previously, Russia has already stopped the supply of gas to Bulgaria and Poland and many nations are getting anxious about the worsening gas supply condition. On Wednesday, Kremlin imposed sanctions mainly on Gazprom Germania which is a European subsidiary of Gazprom.

Other than this, Moscow also imposed sanctions on the owner of the Polish part of the Yamal-Europe pipeline that carries Russian gas to Europe. Additionally, the spokesperson of Russia, Dmitry Peskov states that there can be no relations with the companies affected nor can they take part in supplying Russian gas.

Germany is the biggest importer of Russian gas in Europe. Germany said that some subsidiaries of Gazprom Germania were receiving no gas because of the sanctions. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck further commented, "Gazprom and its subsidiaries are affected. This means some of the subsidiaries are getting no more gas from Russia. But the market is offering alternatives."
