News Synopsis

The European Commission has provided additional information on how it intends to reduce Europe's reliance on Russian fossil resources. Russia provides 40% of the EU's natural gas and 27% of the EU's imported oil. In exchange, the EU provides the country with around €400 billion every year. The EU now wants to accelerate its transition to green energy, but it also wants to invest in pipelines in other nations. It has been accused of using Russian energy to help pay for the war in Ukraine.

The REPowerEU initiative was first unveiled in March, with the declared goal of halving Russian gas imports by 2022. Consumers and businesses in Europe are now facing higher expenses as a result of rising energy costs. The amended ideas layout not just how the EU intends to deal with the current gas issue, but also how it intends to keep its vow to wean itself off Russian energy by 2030.

The strategy is divided into three sections. Improving energy efficiency, growing renewable energy use, and ensuring non-Russian oil and gas suppliers are all priorities. "We're pushing our goal to a new level," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, as she gave the update.
