News Synopsis

According to Donald Trump's former personal attorney, he is the subject of a criminal investigation in Georgia investigating suspected attempts to rig the 2020 presidential election.

Rudy Giuliani, a former mayor of New York, denounced the inquiry as politically motivated and is scheduled to testify this week in court in Atlanta. Giuliani spearheaded legal actions to contest the election's results. He also emphasised Trump's illogical assertions regarding purported voter fraud.

In December 2020, while serving as the former president's election attorney, Giuliani persuaded Georgian state legislature to reject President Joe Biden's election results while making numerous baseless claims about stolen ballots. Robert Costello, Giuliani's lawyer, told US media on Monday that the prosecution had alerted their legal team that the former mayor was being investigated.

But when he testifies in court on Wednesday,Giuliani would decline to respond to any inquiries about Trump that might violate the attorney-client privilege, Costello said. Giuliani claimed that Atlanta was one of "the most corrupt cities in the nation" and that it was a "Democratic dictatorship" on a radio talk show in New York on Monday.

According to audited statistics, Biden, a Democrat, defeated Trump, a Republican, by 12,670 votes in Georgia. The criminal investigation was started in Fulton County, where the investigation is based, after a recording of a phone call from January 2021 surfaced, in which Trump was overheard pleading with the state's top election official, Brad Raffensperger of Georgia, to "find" enough votes to change the outcome.

In May, a prosecutor called a grand jury to hear the testimony. Fani Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County, has stated that charges of conspiracy or racketeering may come out of her inquiry. However, the mere fact that Giuliani has been invited to testify does not automatically imply that he or anybody else will face criminal charges.
