News Synopsis

According to a draft note by the transport department of the Delhi government, it has proposed making it necessary for a quarter of new cab registrations to be electric vehicles. The proposal will mandate companies like Ola, Uber, Swiggy, and Zomato to register with the Delhi government as soon as the law comes into effect.

According to a report of the Federal Earth Science Ministry of India, the transport sector is one of the major contributors to Delhi's pollution, followed by industries and utilities.

The report also included that the cabs have been a major source of pollution in the city. If the draft is approved it could be a relief to the citizens of Delhi and the finances of its public health system. Environmental experts say that these cost millions of dollars in healthcare every year due to pollution.

The mandatory registration could reduce the demand for fossil fuels in and around the city. It also included penalties on companies that do not follow up with the electric vehicle transition targets.
