News Synopsis

Former English soccer captain David Beckham has handed over his Instagram account to a Kharkiv doctor who is helping women give birth in the eastern Ukrainian city.

Beckham, a 46-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder and current co-owner of the American Major League Soccer team Inter Miami, has asked 71.6 million Instagram followers to check his profile to see the work of Irina, a child anesthesiologist and her team after the conflict.

Beckham, a goodwill ambassador for UN children’s agency UNICEF, posted a video message and asked his followers to support the work of the organisation in Ukraine.

Kharkiv has been hit by a barrage of Russian strikes, destroying many buildings ever since Moscow launched what it refers to as a ‘special operation’ in Ukraine last month. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the operation was aimed at disarming Ukraine and eradicating dangerous nationalists. Western nations call it a war of aggression and impose disciplinary sanctions aimed at destroying the Russian economy.

Irina, head of the Regional Perinatal Center, has released a video of the basement where pregnant women and mothers were evacuated on the first day of the Russian invasion. She has also shared an image of a newborn baby dependent on an oxygen generator donated by UNICEF.
