News Synopsis

We have an undying habit of carrying on regressive traditions with us. We inherit these ill practices from our ancestors and refuse to abandon them in the name of culture and traditions. India is filled with regressive traditions. One such ill crime that has taken the shape of tradition is child marriage. Although the act has been declared illegal by the Government of India; many still practice it especially when it comes to girls. Child Marriage is considered the number one reason behind the death of teen girls.

A recent survey by 'Save the Children shows that as many as 60 girls die because of child marriage and early pregnancy in South Asian countries. The survey revealed that more than 22,000 girls die because of early pregnancy. Since these girls are young and have underdeveloped bodies; pregnancy often ends up taking their lives. The report also held a torch to the fact that pandemic has pushed the number of domestic violence cases by a huge mark. Since men lost jobs and people were pushed to the extreme, many took out their frustration on their wives.

Violence against women has become a huge part of the feminist movement around the world, but more so in South Asian countries. Since misogyny and patriarchy are so deeply entrenched in the fabric of Indian society, violence against women has been normalized. But thankfully people have started outraging against it. But it'll be a long time before people abandon this completely.
