News Synopsis

An unprecedented limitation on Chelsea's operational capabilities was imposed by the British government on Thursday after sanctions were imposed on owner Roman Abramovich.

Abramovich was also among seven wealthy Russians who had their assets frozen by the government. It freezes the ability to sell Chelsea which was announced last week after the invasion of Ukraine.

The government has issued what is called a special license to allow Chelsea to continue the game and pay staff. However, the club cannot sell new tickets or products to fans. Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries tweeted that it is about depriving Abramovich of benefiting from his ownership of the club.

The government will work with leagues and clubs to continue playing football, making sure sanctions-hit those intended. Soccer clubs are cultural property and the foundation of our community and the government promises to protect them.
