News Synopsis

As the lunar landscape welcomes the sun once more, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to reestablish communication with the solar-powered lander Vikram and rover Pragyan of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. These dormant lunar explorers are poised to awaken, potentially enabling them to resume their scientific experiments.

Moon's Deep Chill and Dormancy:

The lander and rover entered a sleep mode on September 4 and 2, respectively, in anticipation of the lunar night's bone-chilling temperatures. The lunar night cast a shadow over Earth's natural satellite, rendering it an icy expanse.

However, as the Moon experiences the return of sunlight to its south polar region, where the lander and rover are stationed, their solar panels are anticipated to recharge optimally.

ISRO is now gearing up to initiate contact with the lunar duo, assess their condition and operability, and endeavor to revive them. Nilesh Desai, Director of ISRO's Space Applications Centre, expressed optimism, stating, "We are eagerly waiting for activity from September 22 onwards. We hope that we are lucky enough to revive both lander and rover and get some more useful data."

Bonus Scientific Data:

The potential reawakening of the lander and rover would be a bonus, providing an opportunity to gather additional experimental data for further lunar surface investigations. These lunar pioneers, weighing a total of 1,752 kg, were designed for a single lunar day's operation, approximately 14 Earth days, to study their lunar surroundings.

ISRO aspires to see these dormant explorers spring back to life as the Moon's sun rises once more, allowing them to continue their experiments and studies. On September 4, ISRO shared, "Hoping for their awakening around September 22, 2023."

The Lunar Ambassadors:

The rover had successfully completed its assigned tasks before entering sleep mode. It awaits the next sunrise, expected on September 22, with its battery fully charged and its solar panel poised to capture the rejuvenating light. The lander, too, is in sleep mode, with its receivers active. Both await their potential reawakening to carry out another set of assignments. As ISRO affectionately stated, "Else, it will forever stay there as India's lunar ambassador."

Relevant and latest facts about Chandrayaan-3

  • Chandrayaan-3 is India's third lunar mission and was launched on June 23, 2023.

  • The mission includes a lander, rover, and payloads to study the Moon's surface and atmosphere.

  • The lander and rover were put into sleep mode on September 4 and 2, respectively, ahead of the lunar night setting in on Earth's only natural satellite.

  • The lunar night lasts for about 14 Earth days, and during this time, the temperature on the Moon can drop to as low as -180 degrees Celsius.

  • ISRO is hoping that the solar panels on the lander and rover will be able to charge their batteries now that the Sun has risen again on the Moon.

  • If ISRO is able to revive the lander and rover, they will be able to continue with their scientific experiments for another 14 Earth days.

ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 mission holds the promise of a rekindled exploration of the Moon's mysteries as its lander and rover prepare to stir from their deep lunar slumber.
