News Synopsis

The Canadian government added twice as many jobs as expected in December, with additional 54,700 new positions. Employment increased in Ontario and Saskatchewan, meanwhile, it declined in Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to the Statistics of Canada’s Labour Force survey held in December, the total number of immigrants was 0.6% higher than the previous two years. Most of the employment gains took place in professional, scientific and technical services along with wholesale and retail trade.

The main immigration pathway in Canada focuses especially on admitting high skilled workers. It also includes pathways for lower-skilled workers, with some Provincial Nominee Programs, for instance, there are still economic immigrants coming to Canada as high-skilled workers.

The employment rate among the core aged group was almost 83% in December. The administration of Justin Trudeau is set to revise up the target for the next year after meeting the targets of 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021.
