News Synopsis

Catamaran, the venture capital firm founded by Infosys luminary Narayana Murthy, is gearing up to diversify its investment portfolio by focusing on precision manufacturing startups. This strategic move aims to support entities engaged in deep tech manufacturing, particularly in the domains of automobiles and component exports, revealed a senior official at Catamaran during the Digital Acceleration and Transformation Expo (DATE).

Speaking to PTI, Catamaran's Chairman, MD Ranganath, underscored the evolving investment landscape in India. Ranganath emphasized that while valuation expectations in startups have seen a decline from the previous year, innovative ideas backed by robust business models will continue to attract significant investments.

"Our primary focus, besides our existing service-oriented ventures, now extends to precision manufacturing. With India increasingly attracting manufacturing investments, we are seeking opportunities to invest in companies capable of both exporting and producing deep tech components, especially in the automotive sector," stated Ranganath.

Catamaran's investment portfolio already boasts a diverse range of companies, including notable names like SpaceX, deep-tech energy startup Log 9, B2B e-commerce firm udaan, edtech giant Udemy, and fintech player Acko, among others.

"Overall, while the market's valuation expectations have seen a reduction compared to the previous year, our investment strategies revolve around solid business models and a company's relevance in its respective market. We are confident that our investment choices are well-founded," affirmed Ranganath.
