News Synopsis

According to analyst and supplier estimates passenger vehicle makers are looking to increase production by an average of 18-20% in the March quarter compared to the December quarter as semiconductor shortages eased. If the companies end up manufacturing the vehicles as planned, it is likely to exceed even the pre-Covid volumes of Q4FY20.

Maruti Suzuki India is also planning to close to 490,000 units of 10-15%. Tata Motors is likely to crank out over 120,000 units in the March quarter as compared to more than 99.000 units it produced in the December quarter.

The second-largest auto manufacturer by volume, Hyundai continues to struggle with regards to semiconductor sourcing and may not be able to accelerate the production much. It can work in favour of Tata Motors and may help it bridge the volume gap with the Korean carmaker. The production volumes in all likelihood will surpass the pre-covid levels but the chip shortage will continue to haunt the firms for three to four quarters more.
