News Synopsis

President Joe Biden is expected to announce a total of more than $1 billion in new military assistance to the government of Ukraine as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to make a plea to Congress for more aid in order to defend his country against Russia's invasion.

The military aid is expected to include some of the military equipment that the Ukrainians need the most including portable air defences such as Javelins and Stingers. The fund would come from the $13.6 billion allotted for Ukraine in the omnibus budget bill.

The package that the US President will announce includes over $200 million in support to be sent over the weekend and around $800 million in new funding for a total of more than $1 billion.

The White House is considering sending more troops to Europe to supplement the approximately 15,000 people deployed in Europe since the onset of the crisis in Russia and Ukraine, but Biden is not expected to send other troops.

The US is still in the process to send the most recent tranche of support, about $350 million in arms, to Ukraine. Since 2014, the US has provided $2.5 billion in military aid before the invasion of Ukraine.
