News Synopsis

For a long time, the US has been a supporter of the Israeli government and its politics. This support became all the more substantial under the tenure of Trump and his Republican politics but Joe Biden has gone against the tide and strongly opposed Israel's government decision to build settlement homes on the West Bank. Biden reasoned his opposition by saying that it will worsen the tension between Israel and Palestine and all the efforts for a two-state solution will go in vain. Biden’s government has been very critical of Israel’s decision to build 1,300 homes on the occupied Palestinian lands, completely engulfing it in their own borders. Around 450,000 Israeli Jews live on the West Bank which is illegal under international law since the land belongs to the state of Palestine and has been claimed by the Israeli state by forcing Palestinians out of their homes.

Israel-Palestine conflict is decades old; beginning around 1948 and continuing to date. The conflict began when Israeli began expanding their state and occupying Palestinian lands, particularly West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This led to two Intifadas, which is the Palestine uprising against the Israel Occupation. This conflict again made international news in 2021 when Israeli forces began evicting four Palestine families living in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shaikh Jarrah. The war ended on 21 May when a ceasefire came into effect.
