News Synopsis

In a stellar display of athleticism, Indian javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena made an indelible mark at the Asian Games 2023, securing gold and silver medals, respectively, as Indian athletes continued their outstanding medal run.

The athletics competition witnessed a spectacular performance, contributing seven medals to India's growing tally.

"Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra defended his title with a season's best throw of 88.88m in his fourth attempt, while Kishore Jena secured the silver with a personal best of 87.54, also in his fourth attempt."

Neeraj's triumph, although marred by a malfunction in electronic distance measurement during his first attempt, showcased his resilience and skill. Kishore Jena's stellar performance not only earned him a silver but also secured his place in the Paris Olympics by surpassing the qualification mark of 85.50. Neeraj had previously qualified for the 2024 Games with an 88.77m throw at the World Championships in Budapest.

In a thrilling men's 4x400m relay, the Indian quartet of Anas Muhammed Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh clinched the gold with a remarkable timing of 3:01.58.

"India also secured a silver in the women's 4x400m relay as the quartet of Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi, and Subha Venkatesan clocked 3:27.85."

The day's medal haul continued with Harmilan Bains and Avinash Sable winning silver medals in women's 800m and men's 5000m, respectively. Harmilan displayed an impressive timing of 2:03.75, while Sable produced an effort of 13:21.09.

"In the inaugural 35km mixed team event for race walking, Manju Rani and Ram Baboo secured the bronze medal."

Despite an exceptional effort by Anil Kushare in the men's high jump with a season-best jump of 2.26m, he narrowly missed a medal, finishing in fourth place.

In the women's Triple Jump final, India's Sheena Varkey Nellickal secured the sixth position with a throw of 13.34m.
