Ashwini Vaishnaw to Unveil IndiaAI Portal as 10 Firms Pledge 14,000 GPUs

News Synopsis
The Indian government is set to launch the IndiaAI Compute Portal, a dedicated platform that will allow central ministries, state governments, and other key stakeholders to request compute capacity at subsidized rates. This initiative is part of the IndiaAI Compute Pillar, which recently issued a memorandum detailing discounted compute, network, and storage services for Union ministries, departments, and state authorities.
The IndiaAI Mission will cover 40% of computing costs for "eligible users," enabling more widespread access to AI-driven computing resources.
Speaking to Source, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the IndiaAI Compute Portal will go live in the next 7-8 days, providing seamless access to high-performance AI compute power.
IndiaAI Mission to Deploy 14,000 GPUs for AI Research and Development
A key highlight of the IndiaAI Mission is its plan to distribute 14,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to bolster AI computing resources across the country. These GPUs will be sourced from ten companies that successfully placed the lowest bids, as per the HT report.
Among these, Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, Tata Communications, and AWS's managed service providers have already made available 10,000 GPUs, while the remaining 4,000 GPUs are in the procurement pipeline. Companies like Jio Platforms and CtrlS Datacenters are expected to acquire these additional units soon.
Breakdown of GPU Allocation Under IndiaAI Mission
The IndiaAI Compute Portal will feature high-performance AI hardware to support research and development. The current GPU allocation includes:
-
Yotta Data Services: 9,216 GPUs (including 8,192 Nvidia H100 chips)
-
AWS Managed Service Providers (CMS Computers, Locuz Enterprise Solutions, Orient Technologies, Vensysco Technologies): 1,200 GPUs (800 AWS Inferentia 2 + 400 AWS Trainium 1)
-
Jio Platforms: 208 Nvidia H200 GPUs + 104 AMD MI300X GPUs
-
Other Providers: Tata Communications, CtrlS Datacenters, and E2E Networks
Approximately 70% of the GPUs deployed under the IndiaAI Mission will be high-end models like the Nvidia H100, while the remaining 30% will include older-generation GPUs or lower-capacity models.
Jio Platforms has also indicated plans to submit revised bids for additional GPUs in the next empanelment round on April 30.
Government's AI Push: Strengthening India’s AI Ecosystem
The Indian government is intensifying efforts to strengthen its AI capabilities, particularly in response to China’s DeepSeek AI model, which was developed at a significantly lower cost than global AI leaders like OpenAI.
By acquiring and deploying new GPUs, the government aims to equip AI startups, research institutions, and developers with the necessary compute power to train foundational AI models. These models form the backbone of AI-powered applications, such as chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini.
The IndiaAI Compute Portal will play a critical role in accelerating India’s AI growth, ensuring affordable and efficient access to high-performance computing resources for innovation and research.
