News Synopsis

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister of electronics and information technology, stated that the goal of the upcoming edition of India's semiconductor program is to develop at least 10 chipsets domestically by concentrating on the chip design ecosystem.

In an interview with News Surge, the minister stated that the design, manufacturing, and packaging of these chipsets will all be done in India.

According to Vaishnaw, the second iteration of Semicon will primarily concentrate on obtaining at least ten chipsets that are complete solutions and moving those solutions along the value chain of fabrication and ATMP (assembly, testing, and packaging procedure).

It is important to note that the Semicon India initiative, which would invest INR 76,000 Cr to build the nation's semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem, was authorized by the Centre in 2021.

We will also concentrate on the other essential components of the ecosystem, such as the tools used in semiconductor manufacture and the layout of cleanrooms in semiconductor facilities.

The minister said, "I talked with three businesses that are really major leaders in this and they are all eager to be a part of the India semiconductor mission.

Furthermore, he added, the government is concentrating on producing the 16,000 gases needed in the nation for a chip production factory.

The union cabinet has accepted three semiconductor bids from private enterprises, totaling INR 1.26 lakh crore in investment, as part of its efforts to boost the semiconductor ecosystem.

One of these suggestions was for the Tata Group to collaborate with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. of Taiwan to establish the nation's first semiconductor fabrication factory in Gujarat (PSMC).

Furthermore, at a cost of more than INR 22,000 Cr, the US-based semiconductor manufacturer Micron is now building an ATMP factory in Gujarat.

The number of these companies in the nation has already significantly increased as a consequence of the government's support for the semiconductor ecosystem.

Vaishnaw said that Nvidia, a major player in the IT industry, has promised to help the recently announced INR 10,372-Cr IndiaAI Mission.
