News Synopsis

Tech giant Apple is planning to raise the pay of its retail staff as a way of retaining workers during the ongoing labor shortage. According to the sources, the company announced a rise of 2% to 10% to salespeople, Genius Bar technical support staff, and some senior workers.

The raise does not include all of the retail staff of the company but only employees who have worked with the company since before 2020. Apple has also increased benefits for its store workers, including more paid sick leaves for all staff and paid vacation time for part-time staff.

The company took the decision after a group of 50 employees walked off the job on Christmas Eve in protest against working conditions. Employees were demanding living wage adjustment raises, more accessible paid leaves, and full benefits for part-time workers.

The company also offered some of its engineers enormous stock-based bonuses of between $50,000 and $180,000 to prevent them from leaving for rival companies such as Meta. Apple offered one-off bonuses of $1,000 in September to all the employees hired before March and a bonus of $500 to employees hired after that.
