News Synopsis

Amazon's Growing Renewable Energy Footprint in India

Amazon is taking bold steps to expand its renewable energy initiatives in India, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability. The company has recently revealed plans for a new 198-megawatt (MW) wind farm located in Osmanabad, Maharashtra.

With this addition, Amazon now boasts 50 wind and solar projects across India, surpassing an impressive 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.

Amazon's Leading Role in Renewable Energy

Not only is Amazon the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy globally, a position it has held since 2020, but it is also the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in India. This announcement underscores Amazon's dedication to environmentally responsible practices.

Economic Impact of Amazon's Projects

Amazon's wind and solar farms have made substantial economic contributions to Indian communities. These projects are estimated to have generated around $349 million (INR 2,885 crore) in economic investments from 2014 to 2022.

Additionally, they have contributed roughly $87 million (INR 719 crore) to India's gross domestic product (GDP) and supported over 20,600 local full-time equivalent jobs in 2022, according to a new economic model developed by Amazon.

Amazon's Vision for a Greener Future

Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, emphasized the importance of rapidly scaling renewable energy to address climate change. He noted that this effort is particularly impactful in India, where the nation's leaders are actively transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Amazon's wind and solar projects play a pivotal role in achieving the company's goal of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, all while creating jobs and fostering economic benefits for local communities.

Supporting India's Renewable Energy Goals

Shri Dinesh Dayanand Jagdale, Joint Secretary of The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, praised Amazon's investments in renewable energy in India. He highlighted how these investments encourage more corporates to embrace renewable energy, aligning with India's goals for sustainability.

India has already achieved its Nationally Determined Contributions target of 40% capacity from renewable sources ahead of schedule, with the aim of reaching 50%. Amazon's renewable energy projects play a crucial role in enabling corporates to meet their 100% renewable energy objectives within the country.

Amazon's Comprehensive Renewable Energy Projects

The wind farm in Osmanabad is the latest addition to the seven utility-scale renewable energy projects Amazon has announced in India over the past year. The company has also disclosed a total of 43 rooftop solar projects that power various Amazon facilities.

When all 50 projects are operational, they are expected to generate energy equivalent to powering more than 1.1 million homes in New Delhi annually, providing clean power for Amazon's data centers, logistics facilities, physical stores, and corporate offices.

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainability

Amazon has actively collaborated with policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to expand corporate renewable energy procurement options in India. These efforts have been instrumental in bringing new renewable energy projects online, allowing others to scale their sustainable initiatives.

Amazon's commitment to India's sustainable future

Amazon's remarkable commitment to invest $26 billion (INR 2,14,942 crore) in India by 2030 includes significant contributions from Amazon Web Services (AWS), with $12.7 billion (INR 1,05,600 crore) earmarked for cloud infrastructure investments. AWS's cloud infrastructure in India encompasses two AWS Regions, providing customers the opportunity to reduce their workload carbon footprint by up to 96% by 2025.

AWS tools and solutions are also aiding organizations like Greenko Group in monitoring their renewable energy operations in India, employing artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, and data analytics.
