News Synopsis

Amazon.com Inc. fired several managers at a warehouse in New York. The JFK8 factory is Amazon's largest on Staten Island, and workers there voted last month to form the tech giant's first union in the United States.

An Amazon spokesperson said that the company had made management changes at the facility after evaluating operations and leadership over the past several weeks.

JFK8 employees voted 2,654 to 2,131 in favor of the organization, the National Labor Relations Board said. It was seen as a major victory for union activists, who have long sought to give the country the right to represent the country's second-largest private company.

At the time, Amazon said it was "disappointed with the Staten Island election results because we believe that having a direct relationship with the company is in the best interest of our employees." According to a regulatory filing published in April, the company intends to appeal its loss, claiming that union organizers threatened employees to vote for the union.

Workers at another Staten Island facility voted against the union earlier this month. The National Labor Relations Board said that 62% of workers who cast valid ballots from a place called LDJ5 voted against the formation of the union.
