News Synopsis

China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba has now been added to the United States ‘Notorious Market List’. This infamous list includes companies that are engaged in trading counterfeit goods and items. Along with Alibaba, another Chinese company- Tencent also accompanied it to land up in this list. Currently, there are 42 online sites and 35 stores on this list. The US agency said these companies "engage in or facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright privacy". US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in a statement said: "The global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods undermines critical US innovation and creativity and harms American workers”. Tencent spokesperson said: "We strongly disagree with the decision made by the United States Trade Representative and are committed to working collaboratively to resolve this matter”. Alibaba however did not say anything on this matter.
