News Synopsis

Indian telecom provider Airtel has formed a joint venture with Hughes Communications India Pvt Ltd (HCIPL). HCIPL is a satellite broadband service provider. It holds a 67% stake and Airtel has a 33% stake in the joint venture.

The venture is going to be termed HCIPL and can combine the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) business of both companies, which can allow the businesses to supply scalable enterprise networking solutions.

A VSAT is a terminal for a two-way satellite ground station, that transmits and receives the data. It also provides satellite-based internet and telecom access to individual and enterprise customers.

The agreement between Airtel and HCIPL for the venture was formed in May 2019 and has finally received statutory approval along with approvals from the National Company Law Tribunal and the Department of Telecom. The venture features a combined base of quite 2 lakh VSATs, which makes it the most important satellite service operator in India.
