News Synopsis

The UK boss of Air France-KLM has said that the cost of air travel is set to rise this year as airlines face soaring overheads. The reason behind this rise is the higher fuel and airport costs that result in a higher airfare.

The airline advised people in the UK to book early as travel rules were eased and this is the reason demand picked up. The airline has already seen strong demand for Easter and summer. The oil prices hit the highest on Monday since 2014, taking the cost of a barrel of benchmark to reach $95.56 from $65 a year ago.

With this, KLM has become the first travel firm to give out a warning on the price rise. Last year, Ryanair and tour operator TUI also predicted holiday costs would be higher than in 2019 as the pandemic eased and demand rebounded.

Even after the challenges, the airline has claimed that bookings from the UK have jumped since pre-departure and Day 2 Covid tests were scrapped for vaccinated travellers. The airline also announced that it would stop services to Ukraine amid concerns Russia is preparing to invade.
