News Synopsis

In the midst of the Agnipath Scheme controversy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with the chiefs of three armed forces: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force. The three service chiefs are expected to brief Prime Minister Modi on the various aspects of the scheme's implementation.

Yesterday, speaking in support of Agnipath, the Prime Minister stated that a few decisions "may appear bitter at first" but will bear fruit in the coming days.

The Centre, as well as several business titans, have backed the contentious scheme. Among those who have supported the scheme are Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, and Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. Meanwhile, the Indian Army has issued the first recruitment notification for Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme, with registration set to begin in July of this year.

The government claims that the 'Agnipath' scheme provides a golden opportunity for young people to join the military and serve their country. On the other hand, opposition parties, particularly the Indian National Congress, have stated that the Agnipath poses numerous risks, undermines the armed forces' long-standing traditions and ethos, and there is no guarantee that soldiers recruited under the scheme will be better trained and motivated to defend the country.
