News Synopsis

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has asked the UN Security Council to either remove Russia from the council or dissolve the council itself. He said that he sees two options for the group following the discovery of mass killings in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha.

The Ukrainian leader asked the council to remove Russia, which is a permanent member of the council in his speech to call for a reform of the world’s security system.

Russia, along with the other four victors of World War II (US, UK, China and France), is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. All permanent members have the right to veto.

Zelenskyy has accused the United Nations of virtually ignoring previous cases of the Russian invasion, such as the 2008 invasion of Georgia and the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Zelensky compared the actions of Russia with the terror groups like ISIS, showing the harrowing footage of Ukrainians. The video ended with a message saying, “Stop Russian Aggression.”
