As a result, non-music videos can now be watched and listened to in 27 different languages. Along with this, YouTube has also introduced new features such as Expressive Speech and Preferred Language, which aim to make the viewing experience more natural and user-controlled.

Auto-Dubbing Now Supports 27 Languages

YouTube has expanded its AI-based Auto-Dubbing feature to all channels and viewers globally. This feature automatically converts spoken audio into text and then dubs it into another language.

The technology was first introduced as a pilot project at VideoCon 2023 and was later limited to informational and knowledge-based content. It has now been expanded to work across all non-music videos. With support for 27 languages, viewers can access a much wider range of content in their preferred language.

Expressive Speech Feature Makes AI Voices Sound More Natural

To reduce the robotic feel of dubbed audio, YouTube has launched a new feature called Expressive Speech. This feature attempts to capture the creator’s tone, emotion, and energy more accurately.

Currently, Expressive Speech is available in eight languages, including:

According to YouTube, this enhancement makes dubbed content sound more realistic and comfortable to listen to.

Preferred Language Setting Gives Users More Control

YouTube acknowledged that earlier, Auto-Dubbing relied on the account’s default language, which limited the experience for many users—especially multilingual viewers or those who prefer watching videos in the original language.

To address this, YouTube has introduced a Preferred Language setting. This allows users to manually choose their preferred dubbed language. Users can also completely turn off Auto-Dubbing if they wish, making the viewing experience more personalised and flexible.

Lip Sync Testing and Smart Filters Introduced

YouTube is also testing a new Lip Sync feature, which aims to match the speaker’s lip movements with the translated audio. This makes dubbed videos feel more immersive. Similar technology is already seen on platforms like Instagram and Facebook Reels.

Additionally, YouTube has clarified that its video-level filters can automatically detect videos that should not be dubbed. These include music videos or silent vlogs where dubbing would not be meaningful. This ensures that the feature is applied more accurately.
