While the feature is still in the development phase, an empty activity for the feature has already been added to the beta version. WhatsApp’s Fintech Expansion in India

WhatsApp introduced its UPI payment service in India in 2020, though its rollout was initially limited due to regulatory restrictions. However, in early 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) lifted the UPI onboarding cap for WhatsApp Pay, allowing it to expand its payment services to all users in the country.

This move has put WhatsApp in direct competition with leading digital payment platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, which already offer extensive bill payment and financial services. The addition of bill payments could make WhatsApp a serious contender in India's digital payments landscape.

What the Bill Payment Feature Means for WhatsApp Users

Currently, WhatsApp Pay allows users to send UPI payments to contacts and businesses. However, integrating bill payments into the platform could position WhatsApp as a full-fledged digital wallet alternative. With this feature, users may soon be able to:

  • Pay electricity, water, and gas bills
