News Synopsis

On her visit to China, UN's top human rights official met with the China's foreign minister and told her that China opposes "politicising" human rights and imposing double standards, according to the foreign ministry. Foreign Minister Wang Yi met UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in the southern city of Guangzhou on Monday, as she began her first visit to China since 2005.

Her six-day fact-finding mission is focused on allegations of abuses against Muslim minorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, but rights activists are concerned that her presence will help whitewash the abuses. China has imprisoned an estimated million or more Uyghur, Kazakh, and other Muslim minorities in what critics call a campaign to erase their distinct cultural identities. China claims it has nothing to hide and invites anyone with no political agenda to visit Xinjiang to witness what it calls a successful campaign to combat terrorism and restore order and ethnic cohesion.

Bachelet will travel from Guangzhou to Kashgar, a former Silk Road stop, and Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. The United Nations and China have barred foreign media from accompanying Bachelet, and it is unclear who she will meet with and how much access she will be given during her visit.
