News Synopsis

Walmart is planning to hire thousands of workers by the end of April as the largest private employer of the USA looks ahead to expand its retail and other businesses in the midst of a tight labour market.

According to Donna Morris, the chief people officer at Walmart, retail chains seeks to hire about 50,000 employees in the United States this quarter during a period when many retailers abandoned hiring after the holiday season. Walmart will also hire employees in new businesses such as health and wellness, and advertising.

The hiring spree comes as Walmart is working to revamp its hiring and human resources strategies and image to prioritize workers' mental health and digital skills. The goal is to make Walmart a place where people feel they can build a long-term career.

Walmart added approximately 100,000 employees to its global workforce in the year ended in January. Last year, the company hired 5,500 pharmacists and pharmacy managers nationwide to expand its healthcare services business, saying the pharmacy doubled as the Covid19 vaccine centre. We hired 4,500 truck drivers to solve supply chain problems and support a growing e-commerce business. Walmart's technology organization has also increased its workforce by about 26%.

Walmart changed its employee education support program last summer to fully cover tuition and books at some of the colleges. According to the company, the move has increased the number of employees using the service by 44%.

Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said that the company expects work challenges to diminish as the New Year begins. With approximately 1.6 million employees worldwide, Amazon has raised the average starting salary for workers to $18 per hour and offers registration bonuses of up to $3,000 in some regions.
