News Synopsis

Volkswagen and Mahindra & Mahindra are considering using MEB electrical components for Mahindra's new bone electric platform, Mahindra said in a statement Thursday. Two companies signed a partnership agreement on Wednesday to evaluate the scope of the partnership.

Designed as an open vehicle platform, the MEB Electric Platform and its components enable automakers to quickly and cost-effectively build a portfolio of electric vehicles. The agreement with Volkswagen comes less than six months after Mahindra's closing of all sorts of collaborations with Ford Motor Company on December 31, 2021.

The joint goal of the two companies is to electrify the Indian automotive market, which is one of the most important automotive growth markets and a key component of the global decarbonization of the mobility sector.

India is one of the top five automobile markets in the world, with about 3 million cars annually. Current forecasts show that the market could grow to up to 5 million units by 2030. So far, the market has been dominated by vehicles with diesel or petrol engines.

However, at the 2021 Climate Summit in Glasgow, India promised to allow only zero-emission vehicles and vans from 2035. As a result, the electrification of the passenger car segment should gain significant momentum over the next few years.
