News Synopsis

Indian Railways is planning to introduce super-fast parcel services keeping in mind the objective of ensuring extra high value and time sensitive cargo. Special types of cargo are currently being handled through other modes of transport.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Railways said that these services are planned to be operated through new 'freight EMU rolling-stock' built on Vande-Bharat platform. The first rake is likely to be in service very soon.

The first service will be launched between Delhi-NCR region and Mumbai region based on talks with some potential customers. A statement issued by the Railways said that the necessary infrastructure and facilities can be created in a time bound manner at the identified terminals within the next three weeks.

The semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express will now be available for freight travel, with the maiden service running between the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai regions. This decision was made by the Railways.

For the 160 km/h carrying of palletized containers, Vande Bharat freight trains were constructed. The 1,800-mm wide rakes with automatic sliding doors would have 264 tonnes of payload capacity, a pneumatically retractable roller floor system with a locking facility for simple handling of pallets, and options to load reefer containers for temperature-sensitive cargo.
