News Synopsis

The US House of Representatives passed a bill to ban imports from Xinjiang, in China. The ban is imposed due to forced labour and threatening sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for persecuting the minority community. Earlier, the USA also announced the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics due to the same issue.

The bill intends to make sure that the goods made with forced labour at Xinjiang Uyghur do not enter the market of the USA. An American website also reported that the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act requires corporations to prove that the imported goods are not made with forced labour along with clear and convincing evidence.

It still needs to be signed by the president of the USA to come into effect. The legislative text points out the poor conditions of Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other Muslim minority groups at extrajudicial mass internment camps.
