US Announces $122 Million Fund for Indian Medical Institutions

News Synopsis

The United States has announced that it will provide $122 million to India's top three medical research institutes to prevent preventable epidemics, detect disease threats early, and respond quickly and effectively. 

A total of $122,475,000 will be distributed over a five-year period to the top three health research institutes in India including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National Institute of Virology (NIV), and the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE).

As announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday, the fund safely and reliably heads India from the threat of infectious diseases by concentrating ICMR institutions' on the emergence and re-emergence of outbreaks of pathogens. 

Eligibility for funding which starts from 30 September 2022 is restricted to ICMR and ICMR institutions, including the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, and the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai.

These organizations are mandated by the Ministry of Health Family Health and Welfare (MoHFW) to oversee the phased validation of priority laboratory pathogens in India, as well as collation and analysis. surveillance data for public health actions and work closely together with the state governments where these institutions are located, the statement added.
