News Synopsis

According to the humanitarian aid organisation UNICEF, more than half of India lacks access to safe drinking water. People in remote areas must walk for miles to get clean water. Fluoride poisoning affects tens of millions of people in 19 Indian states.
Groundwater, which provides 85 percent of drinking water in rural areas, is rapidly depleting, depriving them of their primary source of water and jeopardising India's food security. "There was a time in college when we were only allowed to have one bucket per day because there was a severe drought for a couple of months," Swapnil Shrivastav, co-founder of a clean-tech start-up.

He decided to work on a solution with his college friend Venkatesh R. To combat water scarcity, Shrivastav and Venkatesh created 'Uravu Labs,' a machine that generates sustainable drinking water from the air. The concept of water-from-air is not new. The traditional method, on the other hand, requires a significant amount of electricity to operate and is not always generated from clean, renewable sources.

“To make one liter of water, conventional tech used almost four units of electricity. One unit of electricity is around eight to 10 rupees,” shares Shrivastav.
