News Synopsis

The UPI (Unified Payments Interface) server was down nationwide for over an hour on Sunday. Social media platforms are flooded with complaints as people struggle to make online payments. According to users, online transactions were not processed by some UPI apps such as GPay, Paytm, and PhonePe.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has not yet publicly commented on the outage. Previously, the UPI server went down on January 9th of this year.

According to reports, UPIs account for more than 60% of retail transactions nationwide. In March alone, the total UPI transaction of over Rs 540 crore was recorded from Rs 9.60 lakh crore, according to NPCI data.

The suspension came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed UPI, online payments during his monthly radio show Mann Ki Baat on Sunday. Prime Minister Modi urged people to take advantage of "cashless layouts" and said that every day around Rs 20,000 crore online transactions are made.

He further said, “Now even in small villages and towns, people are using UPI. It is benefiting both shopkeepers and customers. Online payments are developing a digital economy, everyday Rs 20,000 crore online transactions are taking place.”
