News Synopsis

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, said that the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance estimates that it will cost $5 billion a month to sustain the economy.

Kristalina Georgieva further said, “We have been engaged very closely with the Ministry of Finance on the estimates they have provided us or what would be necessary to retain the functioning of the economy over the next three months and they came up with the number of $5 billion for every month.”

According to Georgieva, there was "uncertainty" in the amount, but it was unlikely to exceed the country's financial needs, and the IMF worked with its partners to mobilize "such support." They were already discussing the package and high certainty did not stop them from working on this.

When asked if the fund's $5 billion monthly pledge was solid, she said she would talk to her partner, but said it was essential to close the financial gap in the grant.
