News Synopsis

The auto safety agency of the USA has stepped up its probe in the engine fires cases that have come out in some of the Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Co. vehicles for more than six years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an Engineering Analysis that will be covering the evaluation of around 3 million vehicles along with the efficiency of recalls that were initiated by the two companies. The NHTSA has also said that it is aware of all the cases where the fire occurred due to engine failures.

The NHTSA started an investigation in 2019, with 2011-2014 Kia Optima and Sorento and 2010-2015 Kia Soul. It also included 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe in order to investigate the cases of non-crash fire in the vehicles.

Both the companies have agreed to cooperate with NHTSA in regards to non-crash engine fires. Hyundai and Kia have also agreed to pay a civil penalty of $210 million last year.
