News Synopsis

Twitter, a microblogging site, has introduced a crisis misinformation policy that will help to hide tweets that share false information during a crisis.

The company said that access to credible, authoritative information and services is even more important during a period of crisis. “We are introducing our crisis misinformation policy, a global policy that will guide our efforts to elevate credible, automotive information and will also help to ensure viral misinformation is not amplified or recommended by us during crises,” the company said in its blog post.

Twitter claims that the new approach will help to slow the spread of misinformation, and misleading content that could cause severe harm, and make reliable information more accessible during crisis events. The platform said it needs to be validated from multiple trusted and publicly available sources to determine if the claim is misleading.

Twitter also said, “To reduce potential harm, as soon as we have evidence that a claim may be misleading, we will not amplify or recommended content that is covered by this policy across the platform.”

In addition, Twitter has announced that it will stop adding warning labels to highly visible tweets and tweets from well-known accounts such as state-affiliated media accounts, and verified official government accounts.
