Toyota Fortuner and Legender Cross 3 Lakh Units Sold in India

News Synopsis
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced a significant achievement — cumulative sales of the Toyota Fortuner and Legender SUVs have surpassed 3 lakh units in India. The milestone, declared from the company's headquarters in Bengaluru, highlights the growing popularity of these models since the Fortuner’s launch in 2009 and the Legender’s debut in 2021.
Fortuner: A Legacy of Performance and Dominance
Since its introduction in 2009, the Toyota Fortuner has consistently dominated India’s premium SUV market. Known for its rugged build and powerful performance, the Fortuner is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine delivering 204 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque. Built on a ladder-frame chassis, it is engineered for off-road strength and 4x4 capabilities, making it a favorite among adventure seekers and performance SUV enthusiasts.
Legender: Premium Features for Urban SUV Buyers
Launched in 2021, the Toyota Legender is aimed at a more urban and luxury-oriented audience. While based on the Fortuner platform, the Legender adds premium design and tech elements like dual-tone exteriors, sequential LED turn indicators, wireless smartphone charging, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system. Despite its luxury appeal, the Legender maintains the rugged performance of the Fortuner with its 4x4 drive system.
Manufacturing Strength: Made in India for India
Both the Fortuner and Legender are produced at Toyota's Bidadi manufacturing facility near Bengaluru. TKM’s first plant, where these models are assembled, has an annual installed capacity of 1,32,000 units. In addition to the Fortuner and Legender, the plant also produces the Innova Crysta and Innova HyCross, catering to diverse market needs.
Customer-Centric Approach with T CARE Ecosystem
To enhance customer satisfaction and vehicle longevity, Toyota has developed a comprehensive after-sales service program called the T CARE ecosystem. This program includes a range of services under categories such as T DELIVER, T GLOSS, T ASSIST, T SAATH, T SECURE, T CHOICE, T INSPECT, and T SMILE. These initiatives cover every stage of the vehicle ownership journey — from purchase to resale.
Toyota's Vision and Customer Commitment
Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President of Sales, Service, and Used Car Business at TKM, expressed gratitude to the brand's loyal customers. He emphasized that the Fortuner and Legender are ideal for both urban roads and rugged terrains, offering a blend of luxury, power, and reliability. Both models are built on Toyota’s globally recognized QDR philosophy — Quality, Durability, and Reliability — a commitment that enhances long-term ownership value.
Toyota’s Expanding Manufacturing Capabilities in India
Toyota Kirloskar Motor operates as a joint venture, with 89% equity held by Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan and 11% by India’s Kirloskar Systems Ltd. The automaker has a workforce of over 6,500 employees and occupies around 432 acres of land in Bidadi.
TKM operates two production plants. The second plant, active since December 2010, has an installed capacity of 2,10,000 units annually and produces models like the Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Hilux.
Beyond Fortuner and Legender: A Diverse Product Portfolio
In addition to the Fortuner and Legender, Toyota markets a wide range of models in India. These include the Glanza, Rumion, and the recently launched Urban Cruiser Taisor, developed through collaborations and partnerships. The luxury MPV Vellfire and the iconic Land Cruiser 300 (LC 300) are imported into India as fully built units (CBUs), catering to niche customer segments.
Conclusion: A Milestone that Reflects Trust and Legacy
Crossing the 3 lakh sales mark for the Fortuner and Legender is more than just a commercial success for Toyota — it reflects years of customer trust, consistent performance, and Toyota's unwavering commitment to quality. As demand for rugged yet refined SUVs continues to grow, Toyota’s strong foundation and innovation-led approach ensure it remains at the forefront of India’s SUV market.
